Why a Site Is Down For You But Not Everyone Else

You type your site's URL. Nothing. You check on your phone, still nothing. You are about to declare an outage — and then a teammate on the other side of town loads the page instantly. The site is "down" for you and perfectly fine for everyone else.
This is one of the most common and most confusing monitoring scenarios. Here is what is actually happening and how to tell the difference between a real outage and a you-specific problem.
Why One User Sees Down While Others See Up
- Your internet connection or ISP is having problems — packet loss, routing issues, or a DNS resolver that is failing.
- Local DNS caching — your computer or router is holding a stale or poisoned record while the real DNS has already updated.
- Your location's network path to the host is broken even though other regions route fine.
- Edge caching artifacts — you are seeing a cached error or a CDN edge node is misbehaving for your region.
- A regional outage — a cloud provider or hosting region goes down for your area only.
In every one of these cases, the site works for most users — and a single-location check from your own computer cannot tell you that.
Why Single-Location Monitoring Lies to You
A monitor that checks from one server has exactly the same blind spot you do: it sees one network path. If that path is broken — even for a reason unrelated to your site — the monitor reports "down" and you get a false alarm. Worse, it can miss real outages that only affect other regions.
The fix is to check from multiple, independent locations and compare. That is what multi-region monitoring is for.
How Multi-Region Consensus Works
Monitorion runs each check from several global regions at once. A monitor only transitions to "down" when the majority of regions agree the site is failing. A single region having a bad day — a flaky ISP, a BGP issue, a provider hiccup — is noted but does not page anyone.
That one design choice removes the largest source of alert fatigue while making real, geographically-spread outages much more likely to be caught early. We walk through the mechanics in multi-region monitoring and false alarms.
What to Do When It Happens
- Check from a different network — a phone on mobile data, or our free HTTP checker, gives you a second vantage point in seconds.
- Flush your DNS or switch resolvers (try 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8) to rule out local caching.
- Look at your monitoring — if your multi-region checks are all green, the problem is almost certainly on your side, not the site's.
- If checks are failing from multiple regions, it is a real outage — start your incident response.
